The research project Information, motivation, & co-creation behaviors of literary tourists & their quest for meaningful experiences explores the behaviors of travelers seeking experiences related to authors, books, or characters. Though travel has experienced a resurgence following pandemic closures, travel uncertainty prompts travel professionals to consider unique options to entice travelers. Literary tourism could allow travelers to connect to destinations as their favorite book characters do, yet little is known about the information-seeking behaviors, motivations, and needs of literary tourists when searching for and sharing literary activities in online environments. Understanding the information and motivation behaviors of literary travelers could help information professionals and tourism operators better understand this population and the experiences that inspire co-creation of knowledge within their online communities. This project gathers data about literary travelers and their information-seeking behaviors during the pre-planning phase, their observations during travel, and their sharing behaviors following literary travel experiences.What motivates the literary traveler in choosing activities and how does their experience during travel affect their motivation to share and co-create knowledge? This project on literary travelers began with a netnographic observation (Kozinets, 1998; Kozinets, 2006; Kozinets, 2020) of three fan-based Facebook groups, collecting 45 posts from 38 users. Online selfinterviews were completed by 31 literary travelers and interview questions were informed by Dervin's sense-making theory (Dervin, 1983; Foreman-Wernet & Dervin, 2016; Souto et al., 2012). Both deductive and inductive coding were utilized during data analysis, and Pine and Gilmore's (1998; 1999) experience economy model was used to correlate the varied literary traveler activities to the experience realms for insight into how these experiences engage the literary traveler. This project revealed literary travelers in this study practice a virtuous circle of information behavior through social media post interaction in fan-based groups, promoting a sense of community, and choose literary experiences aligned to their motivation for the activity, customizing it to their needs.
