Flight attendants' complex combination of job duties constitutes a unique occupation. Historically, flight attendants have worn uniforms for the purpose of promoting the desired image of airlines with little regard for functional fit or movement. Their design has rarely incorporated elements cohesive to their physical duties. When creating a uniform for varied occupational duties, such as a flight attendant, all aspects of the job description and the movements associated with them should be considered. The purpose of this study was to explore the fit, sizing, and function of flight attendants' uniforms when performing their routine and emergency duties in flight. DeJonge's (1984) functional clothing design process provided the framework in which to understand flight attendant uniforms as functional garments. In a collective case study, 26 participants were interviewed to gain insight into the functionality of their garments. These interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis to gain greater insight. All participants in this study were adult (over 18 years of age) flight attendants currently employed by American Airlines and based in the United States. Results found that flight attendants make adjustments in order for their uniforms to function during routine and emergency duties. This central theme of the study is supported by the following six themes: functional fit, sizing, functional flaws, fabric, compliance, and flight attendant culture. This study provided insight into the overlooked area of fit and function of flight attendant garments and can be used to propose improvements to uniforms in order to improve the functionality and safety of the flight attendant. Other organizations which require their employees to wear uniforms can also benefit from an understanding of the garment in relation to the duties performed while wearing it. Additional studies on the functional movements required of flight attendants as they perform their duties as well as addressing issues with sizing and thermal comfort are needed.
