Exploring human subjectivity via post-Mao Chinese fiction, this project treats the production of individuality as an ever-changing process which is mutually informed by storytelling and history. Constructing myths of humanity to be emulated or feared, fiction writers both distill and project certain collective cultural hopes and anxieties onto the page. In reading Bildungsromane written at a time of social and political flux after the death of Mao then, this paper strives to form a coherent philosophical approach to humanity at a moment of uncertainty vis-a-vis the state and the individual's relationship with global capitalism and liberal democracy. Following a cultural and individual particularity daunted by the homogenizing force of capitalism, the goal is to examine the possibility of an approach to selfhood which retains autonomy and even revolutionary capacity in a post-revolutionary environment.{A0}
