R. W. Connell's concepts of hegemonic and nonhegemonic masculinities make it easy to understand the social dynamics between many different kinds of masculinities. Hegemonic masculinity which is based on gender-specific norms and roles is transmitted to the next generations through role models. In this sense, fathers play the most significant role in the social construction of secure masculine identities for boys. Thus, the family is an important institution in constructing the hegemonic masculine identity. In addition to the family institution in which a male relative can be substituted for an absent father, other social institutions such as the army, the media, and the religion can fulfill the absence of a father and take a substantial part in the institutionalization of hegemonic masculinity. In contemporary American drama, one of the playwrights whose plays deal with the social construction of masculinity is David Rabe. In The Vietnam Plays which include four plays (The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, Sticks and Bones, Streamers, and The Orphan), David Rabe not only delineates the Vietnam War but also presents fatherless male figures who are trying to fit into the definitions of hegemonic masculinity. These plays also interpret how various institutions such as the family, the army, the media, and the religion contribute to establishing hegemonic and subordinate masculinities. This study explores how the fatherless male characters, supported by role models provided by various institutions, try to perform according to the norms of hegemonic masculinity in David Rabe's The Vietnam Plays.
