Laos, the country formally known as Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a collectivistic Southeast Asian nation that is home to more than 100 tribes. With an undercurrent of a comfortable coexistence between Buddhism and animism, Lao people daily live with a fear of ghosts and of people in higher positions. The purpose of this constructivist basic qualitative study is to understand and describe how Lao Christians in Vientiane Capital perceive faith's effects on culturally rooted fear in their relationships. Using semistructured interviews, 21 Lao Christians, ages 18-40, were interviewed in Vientiane Capital about faith, fear, and their relationships. This study found that fear of ghosts dictated behavior among participants before they professed faith in Christ and that fear of persons in higher positions required keng jaiy, respect that entails prescribed speech and behavior in the presence of older persons or people of higher positions. The terms respect, obedience, and worship were often used in tandem or interchangeably as respondents spoke about ghosts and hierarchy. After professing faith in Christ, Christians varied in whether they continued to fear ghosts. Over time, the distance between participants and their Christian leaders decreased to the point where the relationships were considered comfortable and close. The participants' faith also contributed to transforming familial relationships and resulted in deep, rich relationships with other Christians.{A0}
