This study examines the contextual background for Irenaeus' pneumatology. Irenaeus' thinking is the product of his interpretation of Scripture, his use of the regula fidei as a hermeneutical lens, the influence of his elders in Asia Minor, and the charismatic milieu to which he was exposed. Irenaeus' link to Asia Minor cannot be undervalued. Irenaeus is a son of Asia Minor and several movements influence his thinking. The Quartodeciman controversy and the New Prophecy Movement are two movements that evidence his ties. The Apocryphal Acts also provide a contextual backdrop for Irenaeus' thought. The authors record miracles, charismatic expressions of the Spirit, alongside a real struggle for authority in the local churches. Theophilus of Antioch's understanding of the Holy Spirit influences Irenaeus. Irenaeus shares certain themes that appear in the Odes of Solomon, such as feminine terms for the spirit. To complete the contextual framework, two major trajectories of the Spirit in the second century are present in Irenaeus, namely, the Spirit as Creator and the Wisdom Spirit pneumatologies. These four major categories influence Irenaeus' pneumatology, namely Scripture, the regula fidei, his Asia Minor elders, and the charismatic milieu of his Christian experience.
