Pastoral burnout is a crisis that affects many pastors within the United States, stemming from prolonged exposure to role related stressors, producing feelings of detachment, loss of motivation, and decreased satisfaction in both the ministry and personal life. This narrative inquiry was an exploration of the stories Baptist pastors tell about caring for themselves when facing burnout in the Midwestern United States. The theoretical foundation for this study was a performance model of spiritual leadership, having components of faith towards vision, altruistic love, and spiritual well-being. The research questions were formulated based on the theoretical foundation used to guide study of the phenomenon. Critical-case purposive sampling was used to identify a sample of 12-15, Baptist clergy, with more than 10 years in ministry, identified as having experienced prolonged role related stresses, without leaving the ministry due to burnout. 11 Baptist pastors formed the final sample. Data was collected using individual, narrative interviews, where pastors were asked to tell their ministry story in dealing with ministry role-related stresses. Probing questions were asked based upon a researcher-developed interviewing guide. Data was coded, using elements of plot, and analyzed to answer the research questions. Findings revealed patterns of sharing responsibilities with God while accepting personal limitations, patterns of showing self-compassion, receiving compassion from others, and delegating work to support networks while finding purpose in the work they performed as prevalent in the stories of thriving pastors. Further research may explore applications of spiritual leadership theory in similar populations dealing with burnout.
