This dissertation investigates the primacy of divine love in Aquinas' theology of redemption. Aquinas articulates the mystery of redemption on the soteriological affirmation that divine love accomplishes human redemption through Christ's suffering without compromising the being of God. Christ assumed human nature out of love, and out of love for us, he suffered on the cross. Some contemporary theologians articulate the nature of divine love in the cross of Christ in a manner that suggests that Christ's suffering specifies divine love or that God becomes loving at the event of the cross. It also suggests the powerlessness of divine love in the face of suffering. This dissertation addresses the question of the impassibility and efficiency of divine love in the cross of Christ. For Aquinas, divine love is pure act in the impassible and eternal being of God. It is what gives redemptive value to Christ's suffering. God is not love because he redeems us. God redeems us because he is love. He reveals the gratuitousness of his love for us in the cross of Christ. In Aquinas' doctrine of redemption, divine love in the cross of Christ is not only a revelation of the intensity of God's love for us. It is also efficient in restoring humanity to friendship with God, eliminating the evil of sin, death, and the devil that estranges us from God. This dissertation approaches the primacy of divine love in Aquinas' doctrine of redemption using the exitus-reditus schema. Chapter one is an exploration of what divine love is in itself: all-perfect, pure actuality, and immutable. Chapter two focuses on the exitus of divine love in the mystery of the incarnation of the Son of God, who is the incarnate Love of God for us. Chapter three examines divine love's specification of Christ's suffering as redemptive. Chapter four examines the reditus of divine love. It concentrates on how Aquinas articulates the different theories of redemption and the effects of Christ's redemptive suffering in light of divine love. Chapter five discusses divine love and the cry of dereliction, which contemporary theological discourse takes as its starting point.
