The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted religious leaders, who are often on the front lines of addressing mental health concerns in communities (MacDonald et al., 2020). In times of stress, religious leaders are at risk of developing negative mental health issues related to PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and burnout (Hendron et al., 2014; Holaday et al. 2001; Thorsteinsson et al., 2014). While past literature has highlighted the relationship between religious coping and dispositional traits as facilitators of resilience, there is a dearth of research on the impact of stress and resilience factors among the clergy population, especially as they specifically relate to the stressors of COVID-19. Therefore, this study examined the holistic impact of religious coping and character disposition on mental health outcomes among the emerging religious leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our sample included 614 participants which included data from time point 3 (Fall 2020) and time point 4 (Spring 2021). Half-longitudinal mediational analysis and cross-sectional moderation analysis were conducted examining the relationship between perceived impact of COVID-19 and mental health outcomes with religious coping (prayer, social connectedness/spiritual community, daily spiritual experiences, and spiritual struggles) and character disposition (joy, forgiveness, self-control, and gratitude) as mediators and moderators. Our findings revealed that social connectedness, joy, and self-forgiveness were significant moderators between COVID-19 stress and anxiety. Moreover, perceived COVID-19 impact significantly predicted level of anxiety after 6 months with joy and spiritual struggle as mediators of this relationship. Our study highlights that religious coping and character dispositions are essential factors in explaining and buffering the effects of COVID-19 on mental health of emerging clergy population. Overall, our study provides a preliminary examination of religious coping and character disposition constructs and warrants further research in exploring these resilience factors more in-depth through longitudinal studies.
