Background. According to The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network as reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1 in 44 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many children with ASD may have decreased motor proficiency and poor balance, are less physically active, and have a higher risk of being overweight or obese than children without ASD. Purpose. Situated in Bandura's social learning theory, the purpose of the current study was to examine the effectiveness of a video modeled large amplitude movement (VMLAM) program on motor proficiency (MP) in children with ASD. Method. A multiple probe, single subject design allowed examination and understanding of how each participant responded to the intervention. The VMLAM program was delivered on an Apple iPad®. Participants. Participants were three adolescents with ASD identified as having difficulties in motor proficiency, scoring a below average (BA), 6-10, or well below average (WBA), 5 or less, as defined in the descriptive categories and scale score range of the BOT-2 examiner's manual (Bruininks & Bruininks, 2005). The participants were recruited from a local school, which provides education to individuals with autism, attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and other disorders or combination of disorders. Data analysis. The primary data analysis involved visual analysis of repeated measures of the percent of large amplitude movements and skills performed correctly and independently by each participant. Secondary data analysis involved visual analysis of pre and post BOT-2 SF scores and descriptive categories. Results, Discussion, and Implications. Results of this study suggest that a video modeled large amplitude movement program was an effective and feasible approach to an exercise intervention and holds promise for improvements in motor proficiency in adolescent boys with autism spectrum disorder. Moreover, the study's results provide further support to Bandura's social learning theory.
