In this paper, I focus on hearing mothers who have deaf children to find the mothers' faces and communication strategies for raising their deaf children as a cultural minority in Japan. In doing so, I draw on co-cultural theory and face negotiation theory to make the argument that the mothers' communication regarding their deaf children is related to social stigma, gender bias, and normativity in Japanese contexts. They need to draw on a wealth of communicative strategies to negotiate their identity and that of their child as they navigate a society that defines their deaf children as unhealthy and non-normative defined as unhealthy in our society. Through interviews with the mothers, I try to find their behaviors and communication strategies for building and negotiating their identities as a mother of deaf children and raising cultural minorities. In the end, I suggest some ideas for helping mothers and deaf children be able to live independently without any stigmas and oppression.
