Changes in food availability can have a tremendous impact on primates, as food availability is related to many important aspects of primate life. It is essential to monitor changes in food availability between years to increase our understanding of primate habitats and how these primates adapt to change. Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary (HKK) in western Thailand is home to a population of white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar) living in a mosaic forest. This mosaic forest consists of deciduous and dry dipterocarp forest and is characterized by its notably low fruit productivity, making this habitat seemingly unsuited for frugivorous gibbons. I performed an interannual comparison of phenology data (fruit, leaves, & flowers) for three months of the wet season (July, August, and September) in 2012 and 2018. By calculating a resource availability index (RAI) for each plant part, I was able to test if there were significant differences in food availability between years. I found that 2012 had a significantly higher availability of fruit, young leaves, and flowers overall than in 2018. White-handed gibbons primarily consume fruit, followed by young leaves, so 2018 had limited preferred food availability during these months. In comparing individual tree production, I found that most trees produced plant parts (fruit, leaves, etc.) in one year, not both. The changes between years are likely due to variations in abiotic factors such as rainfall and irradiance, as well as typical seasonal patterns in Thailand. This study provided evidence for significant interannual seasonality in food availability for gibbons in an already low fruit-producing habitat, which may have further implications on this population's size, reproduction, and ranging behavior. The findings of this study would benefit from further investigation of yearly phenological shifts at HKK to establish patterns aiding our understanding of the seasonal variation in food availability here.
