This dissertation research participates in the recuperation, retrieval, and renovation of Vietnam's historical, cultural, political, and religious contexts together within a compelling and dynamic religious education process. Today's Vietnamese educational system continues to be influenced by ancient Confucianism and the effects of French colonialism that began in the 1870s. These influences significantly impacted the practices and beliefs of the Catholic Church's religious education and catechesis throughout the country. Since the time of the Second Vatican Council, the Vietnamese Catholic Church has deliberately tried to establish a reconciliation between the indigenous cultural philosophy and the Christian message in its catechetical processes. This dissertation develops an effective pedagogy of life for religious education in the context of South-Central Vietnam. The research adopts an interpretive approach to relevant documentary sources of the Vietnamese cultural background in the areas of politics, religion, and traditional education developments. It launches an analytical study that suggests how religious education can generate an authentic advance of a catechetical pedagogy for human flourishing in the context of South-Central Vietnam. This concept of religious education promoting human flourishing is based on Thomas Groome's theological vision of appropriation and the developed concepts of Ignatian pedagogy. This is done in conversation with Vietnam's Christian Religious Education Programs as they have developed over the decades. The argument for theologically based human flourishing is built on the biblical foundation of God's will for human flourishing and the teaching of the magisterium within the Catholic Church. This study establishes a pedagogical model for religious education focused on a trinitarian relational approach that is grounded in love and promotes the flourishing of others in holistic self-development while being committed to building a better world for all.
