Democrats and Republicans in the United States are increasingly polarized; not necessarily only because of where they stand on policy issues, but particularly in light of the way they appear to loathe each other as human beings (Iyengar et al., 2019; Iyengar & Westwood, 2015; Kalmoe & Mason, 2022). Partisan discrimination exceeds even racial discrimination in the United States (Iyengar & Westwood, 2015), with studies finding that party identity is used to screen others on dating apps (Huber & Malhotra, 2016) and job applications (Gift & Gift, 2015).Americans are increasingly told by the news media about the phenomenon of polarization within the country, labeling it as a problem that needs fixing (Levendusky & Malhotra, 2016; Robison & Mullinix, 2016). Likewise, a number of studies in the past decade have sought to identify ways in which to depolarize the electorate (Huddy & Yair, 2021; Levendusky, 2018; Levendusky & Stecula, 2021).
