This thesis drew on priming theory and investigated how political memes would shape people's reactions toward uncivil discourses surrounding abortion. The pilot study used a college student sample with a single factor (meme condition: pro-attitudinal, counter-attitudinal, control) between-subjects experimental design. The main study recruited a sample of online internet users and adopted a 3 (meme condition: pro-attitudinal, counter-attitudinal, control) by 2 (disagreement comment tone: uncivil, civil) between-subjects design.The pilot study finds that participants primed with a counter-attitudinal meme have significantly higher perspective taking but lower cross-cutting information seeking intentions than participants in the control condition. The main study reveals that both counter-attitudinal and pro-attitudinal memes enlarged the difference in negative affect but cancelled out the difference in cross-cutting information seeking intentions between the uncivil and civil disagreement comments.{A0}
