Legal translation between English and Arabic
[electronic resource] /by Ali Almanna. - Cham :Springer International Publishing :2023. - vii, 221 p. :ill., digital ;24 cm.
1. Setting the scene -- 2. Global & local strategies -- 3. Lexical features -- 4. Syntactic features -- 5. Modality -- 6. Legal rights -- 7. Contractual obligations -- 8. Torts -- 9. People & law -- 10. Crimes -- 11. Cybercrimes.
This is a coursebook designed for students of translation, which will also benefit professional translators as it covers key issues in contemporary legal translation. The book is divided into two main parts. The first, theoretical part, explores issues such as types of legal texts, readership, communicative purpose, global and local strategies, and modality in addition to analysing the common features of legal discourse in both languages, be they lexical, syntactic, or textual. The second, practical part, discusses issues such as legal rights, contractual obligations, torts, crimes, people and law. It focuses on all types of legal texts, regardless of their classification and examines legislative texts, which have acquired a certain degree of notoriety rarely equalled by any other variety of English. Ali Almanna is Associate Professor of Translation Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Qatar. He obtained his PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Durham, UK and his MA in Translation Studies from Westminster University, UK. In addition to many articles published in peer reviewed journals, he is author, editor and translator of several publications, including The Routledge Course in Translation Annotation (2016), Semantics for Translation Students (2016), The Nuts and Bolts of Arabic-English Translation (2018), The Arabic-English Translator as Photographer (2019), Re-Framing Realities through Translation (2020), and Translation as a Set of Frames (2021)
