Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Bridgeport, 2023.
The 21st century classroom must prepare students to be global citizens prepared with the skills and self-awareness they need to thrive in multicultural settings beyond high school. A specific problem exists in that there is little evidence in the literature that cultural intelligence-a general set of capabilities that allow a person to gain meaning and function in multicultural interactions-is addressed at the secondary level and that schools address cultural intelligence levels in students. Since these capabilities are learned, they can be used in educational settings to increase students' cultural intelligence levels. Cultural intelligence provides insight as to why some people thrive in culturally diverse settings and others do not. The purpose of this quantitative study was to measure the cultural intelligence levels of early adolescents and analyze the impact of foreign language study on cultural intelligence. This study collected data on the cultural intelligence levels of early adolescent students from one middle school in Connecticut using the Cultural Intelligence Scale developed by Ang et al. (2007) to measure a student's ability to understand, act, and manage effectively in culturally diverse situations. Results indicated that there was not a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of students who study a foreign language and students who do not, however there was a limited sample size of participants. Additional research and data collection is recommended to fully grasp the impact of foreign language education on cultural intelligence in secondary students. It was also determined that participating students, whether they studied a foreign language in school or not, scored at the moderate level on the Cultural Intelligence Scale (Ang et al., 2007). When used regularly, the Cultural Intelligence Scale (Ang et al., 2007) can track cultural intelligence progress through the adolescent years within the secondary education setting. With a better understanding of the development of cultural intelligence in adolescents, curricula can be improved to prepare students with the skills to work in diverse settings.
