The understanding of literature is a skill used by everybody in their day-to-day life, even outside the English classroom. While it may be easy for many people to stop reading novels and forget about classics such as The Great Gatsby, they are always subjected to reading, writing, and speaking in their personal and professional lives. In our modern times, people of all ages, including students, interact with aspects of literature nonstop throughout their days, including hearing narratives in sports and completing video games. In analyzing these alternative methods of storytelling under the same guidelines as literature, their literary elements can put them on the same level as traditional literature, even if they are not considered high art like the works of Shakespeare. A case will be argued for these alternative methods of storytelling to be considered as literature. Additionally, it will be argued how and why teachers of English should go about incorporating these modern ideas of day-to-day life into their classrooms for the benefit of their students' comprehension and understanding of literature.
