Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2023.
This thesis looked to explore the topic of Christopher Marlowe's Hero And Leander and its influence over William Shakespeare who, I argue, wrote Much Ado About Nothing as a continuation of the character Hero's story. Shakespeare granted Hero the questionably happy ending she was denied within Marlowe's work. The methods used in order to form this analysis included exploration of biographical details of both authors, understanding and analyzing the concept of influence studies, as well as, close reading. Beginning with exploring the biographical details of these authors I looked at the physical proximity and similarities of both authors. This included both their individual background, such as degree of fame and personal identity, which expanded why they wrote in such a manner. I also explored their conjoined background, in which both men wrote in the same years, at the same age, in the same location. These connecting biographical details allowed for the intersection of influence studies to take hold as there grew a clear link between their biography and the evidence that Shakespeare was influenced by the more famous Christopher Marlowe. Finally, in regards to close reading, this allowed evidence to form between the two works as to my thesis of Shakespeare continuing Marlowe's character of Hero. What could be concluded from my research was that Marlowe was an infamous rule-breaker who was known for writing violent tragedies. Through this, he created his character of Hero, who was a cohesively raped and socially imprisoned woman. Shakespeare, being influenced by Marlowe, recreated the character of Hero who was repudiated and questionably redeemed through marriage in a complicated and entangled fashion. Following through from Marlowe's abrupt morning after within Hero And Leander, into Shakespeare ending Much Ado About Nothing in marriage, Hero was reborn and recast into a socially acceptable woman. The question that plagues my thesis is at what cost to female autonomy does this acceptance occur?
