Thesis (M.A.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2023.
This thesis examines interracial marriage in William Shakespeare's Othello. I specifically explore how blackness develops interracial marriage throughout the play. Ironically, interracial marriage in Othello is an understudied area of exploration. The racialized discourse in the play shows that the phenotypic differences of others, precisely skin color, are transformed into negative connotations. The discourse against Desdemona and Othello situates the couple into light and dark, "light" relating to fairness, and "dark" relating to blackness, which is understood through religious influence. I argue that if Othello were able to maintain his fairness through the recognition of Desdemona, the interracial properties of their relationship would not matter. Because Desdemona loses her fairness, Othello begins to see himself as a Moor and possessing evilness. Thus, Othello begins to internalize his blackness which transforms the drama of interracial marriage into a tragedy. I conclude by analyzing Othello's epilepsy and Desdemona's deathbed scene in Oliver Parker's 1995 and Nicholas Hytner's 2013 National Theatre's Othello to show how the concept of racecraft has stigmatized Othello, which in turn has stigmatized the perception of the couple's marriage.
