Over the past fifty years, women in the United States have made great strides in education and in entry into the workforce. However, despite these advances, women continue to be underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Women's representation is lower than men's at most levels of STEM. This level of representation ranges from their interest in STEM and their intent to major in a STEM field in college to having a career in a STEM field as adults. Research suggests that girls lose interest in STEM during middle school, and their enthusiasm for STEM is minimal compared to boys. This curriculum project addresses the concern about the lack of interest of middle school girls in STEM. The purpose of this project is to design a curriculum to increase girls' interest in STEM through interventions introduced in an informal after-school club for girls. These interventions involve female role models in STEM careers combined with engaging STEM-based activities.
