Some Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church attendees have reported encountering Bible passages where God or Jesus appeared to act unjustly, causing them to question their faith as well as God's benevolence. This research explored approaches to reading troubling Bible passages that lead to a benevolent understanding of God's character for adults at TLUMC. This study surveyed approximately one hundred adult attendees at TLUMC, conducted eight individual interviews, and hosted two focus group interviews of four and two individuals to understand how disturbing Bible passages impacted adults at TLUMC. In addition, this project explored Family Systems Theory (FST), the twelve steps, and Trinitarian theology to propose a communal approach to reading difficult Bible passages.Studies have shown that authoritarian images of God lead to aggressive behavior while imaging God as benevolent fosters dispositions of care and compassion reflective of God's Triune nature. Accordingly, an accurate concept of God is benevolent. Most participants tended to avoid disturbing passages. Such a strategy fails to embrace the inspired nature of Scripture and its sacramental function as a mediator of the divine presence. It neglects the reality that some participants reported disturbing Bible passagesenhanced their confidence in God's benevolence. Accordingly, this project proposed a twelve-step approach informed by FST to help the congregation create a relational environment reflective of the Triune community where congregants feel safe to wrestle with disturbing Bible passages until these difficult Bible passages bless them.
