Worship is the essential character and activity of the visible and invisible Church; therefore, it is essential to understand what worship is and what it does. However, as the Church is a diverse body in terms of chronology, tradition, and culture, worship's outward expression is necessarily contextually defined. What is it that brings unity to the Church's diverse worship? This study aims to bring light to the phenomenon of Christian worship by elucidating its essential nature (what it is) and what occurs as God's people engage in worship. The study proceeds by engaging in a modified grounded theory methodology that draws together the fields of biblical, mystical, liturgical, and ethical theology. Through biblical exegesis, it argues that Scripture's core concept for worship is the demonstration of loving allegiance to God through the fulfillment of the Love Command (to love God and neighbor). Thus, worship engages both the liturgical and moral-ethical life. By engaging in conversation with mystical theology, particularly with Catherine of Siena and Teresa of Avila, it argues that worship is both the means and telos of spiritual formation. Finally, it argues that as the Church worships, it encounters the Spirit, is actualized in the Son, and is reoriented to the Father for the sake of the world in conversation with liturgical and ethical theology. The findings of this research will demonstrate that worship should be a holistic (encompassing all of life), responsive act of voluntary self-sacrificial service and allegiance to God, which transforms the worshipper, worshipping community, and world. The study concludes with several practical implications.
