This dissertation argues that Paul's requests for intercessory prayer do more than garner spiritual support. They also serve a didactic and exhortatory function within the letters. This is evidenced by the significance of their placement in the body-closing, and by their content and wording, which reinforce and apply some of the letters' themes.Chapter 1 introduces the thesis, provides a survey of scholarship related to the topic, and explains the overall methodology of the work.Chapter 2 surveys the findings of other relevant works on ancient letters, especially those related to form and function, in order to help identify body-closing conventions. Special attention is given to the contributions of John T. White. The chapter then looks at body-closing conventions in ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish letters, before considering Paul's awareness and use of these various conventions.Chapter 3 provides an exegetical and thematic analysis of Paul's body-closing requests for intercessory prayer in Romans 15:30-32; Ephesians 6:19-20; Colossians 4:34; and 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2. The analysis shows that each request is worded in a way that recalls some of the major themes of that specific letter.Chapter 4 compares these requests with each other, looking at the similarities and differences in content and wording, to show that the wording of each request is highly contextual, further supporting the thesis.Chapter 5 considers Paul's relationships with the churches from which he requests intercessory prayer to see what light it sheds on his missionary praxis. A case is made for the idea that Paul's requests were direct when he addressed churches with whom he was less acquainted (as a part of his strategy to increase his network of partnerships), and his requests were indirect and terse when he addressed churches with whom he was more acquainted (conveying assurance that they already prayed for him).Chapter 6 offers a summary and conclusions of the work, suggests areas for further study, and provides brief comments on its relevance for practical ministry.
