This study has argued for the existence of a unifying theme of "transgression and expulsion" running through Gen 2-4 which functions as a thread to link three major motifs of this Toledah, namely the cultic motif, human creation motif, and serpent battle motif. It consists of two interrelated parts. First, adopting Robert Longacre's model of discourse analysis, this study conducts a completely dynamic process of discourse analysis of Gen 2-4, both from the parts up to the whole and from the whole down to the parts. This analysis identifies the unifying theme and its three associated motifs in Gen 2-4. Second, closely following the general plotline derived in the discourse analysis and applying the principles of relevance theory, this study explores how various motifs manifest themselves and contribute to the identified unifying theme in their rich ANE cultural background. This study argues that the cultic motif sets up not only the stage for the culminating display of the transgression and expulsion but also the main melody for the whole narrative. The creation and placement of the first man in the Garden of Eden demonstrate the validity of viewing the Garden of Eden as a prototypical sanctuary, in which the first man is serving as a divinely installed priest within the boundary prescribed in Mosaic legal terms. The conflict between the serpent and human beings in Gen 3 reflects a deliberately transformed ANE cosmic battle motif. Against the background of this transformed cosmic battle, this study further demonstrates that God's curse upon the serpent reflects the common ANE concept of curses falling upon whoever damages the divine statue in the sanctuary. In chapter six, this study further demonstrates the continuity of the cultic motif, and serpent battle motif in the story of Cain. Moreover, it shows that the Genesis author demythologized the ANE understanding of the origin of civilization by removing the technogony from the realm of the gods and placing it in the realm of the human. This study concludes by pointing out that the theme of transgression and expulsion identified in Gen 2-4 reverberates in the closing chapters of Leviticus and Deuteronomy.
