This study attempts to shed new light upon the world of Isa 63:7-64:11, the longest communal lament in the prophetic books. This portion of text has been relatively unexamined within Isaiah scholarship. In an effort to understand the message, literary nature, and literary and theological function of Isa 63:7-64:11 within its present context as part of Isa 56-66, and reading it particularly in association with Isa 59:1-63:6, this study combines Brevard Childs' canonical approach with text-linguistic and literary approaches, employing VanGemeren's synoptic vision as a hermeneutical premise. We examine the key themes of the servants of YHWH; sin, inability, and the delay of salvation; and the coming of YHWH in Isa 56-66 by means of a sequential reading from the programmatic prologue in 56:1-8 through the confession of sin in 59:9-15a, the coming of YHWH and the magnificent vision of Zion in 59:15b-63:6, to the communal lament in 63:7-64:11; this displays a movement in relation to the divine promise of salvation, the requirements of משפט and צדקה, and high expectations and disappointment. In this progression, the communal lament in 63:7-64:11 functions as an intercessory prayer for the sake of Zion in the form of communal lament by the community of servants of YHWH, and contributes to the historical and theological witness to the character of YHWH's true servants and the incomprehensible character of YHWH and of his plan. YHWH, in hiding his presence from his own children, opens a new era of salvation. A close reading of Isa 63:7-64:11 manifests how beautifully and carefully the prayer was constructed in the form of a communal lament as a persistent reminder to YHWH of his faithful love (חסדי יהוה), of the dire condition of his people, and of the promises of his salvation portrayed in Isa 59:15b-63:6. It powerfully communicates their pain and suffering, their struggles with the issues of human responsibility for their suffering, divine wrath, and YHWH's hiddenness, and their concern for the desolation of Zion and the defilement of the people of YHWH as they live in the tension between past and present, the promise and urgency of salvation and its delay, their faith and their life experiences, and between YHWH's presence and absence. They are yearning for YHWH's coming and his kingdom.
