John's Gospel refrains from including various examples of demonic activities or exorcism accounts that are commonplace in the Synoptic Gospels. Why does John only mention the activity of the devil in relation to Judas and the unbelieving Jews? This study shows that John's Gospel employs the character of Judas (secondary attention is given to the unbelieving Jews) to uniquely emphasize how the works of evil infiltrate Christian communities. This occurs through members of the inner circle who turn out to be rivals of Christ. Although their betrayal might cause great suffering, Christ's victory leads to the community's victory in the end (Jn. 16:33).
