This dissertation fills a gap in the current scholarship by offering an Evangelical dogmatic account (biblically based, historically counseled, and nuanced in terms of speech-action) of the process by which the Holy Spirit bears witness to and through the human spirit. Recognizing humanity's creation in the image of God and remembering John Calvin's presentation of the testimonium Spiritus Sancti internum as authoritatively superior to both reason and experience, evaluation is needed to assess the faculties of the human spirit and whether the witness of the Holy Spirit is intuitively known, experientially imparted, and/or reflectively discerned. Furthermore, acknowledging the reality of human spiritual depravity and the validity of Roman Catholic concerns about the subjectivity of private judgment, assessment is needed regarding the ongoing competence or incompetence of the individual human spirit to discern meaning, significance, and direction in response to the Scriptures and in relation to ecclesial tradition. Following an introductory first chapter, the dissertation's second chapter listens to select voices in historical theology regarding the nature of God as spirit, the distinction of the Holy Spirit within the divine nature, and the complexities of discerning the Spirit's witness within the human spirit and within the ecclesial community. In the third chapter, the communicative nature of the human spirit as the imago Dei is considered exegetically from the inspired testimony of the Spirit to and through creation in Gen 1-3. In the fourth chapter, "witness" is evaluated as an illocutionary speech-action in the Scriptures before examining the perlocutionary effects of regeneration and assurance in chapter five and of illumination and direction (both personal and communal) in chapter six considered in contrast with Luke Timothy Johnson's Midrashic Method before reaching chapter seven's conclusion. Thus, readers will find that the historical, exegetical, and linguistic efforts of chapters 2-4 lay the foundations for the applications and evaluations of chapters 5-7. Consequently, this dissertation presents a considered assessment of the Scriptures' constitutional authority within the overall economy of the Spirit's witness and of the individual's spiritual legitimacy within the broader context of the cloud of witnesses that is the church (past and present).
