Linguistic analysis of Biblical Hebrew is becoming more prominent in biblical studies. The school of linguistics most used in recent history for Biblical Hebrew has been that of the Descriptivists. However, other areas of linguistics exist and can provide useful insights into Biblical Hebrew. One such school of linguistics is called Systemic Functional Linguistics. According to Halliday, the goal of Systemic Functional Linguistics is to understand the syntax of a language as a function of meaning. To this end, the structure of clauses is of special interest. Rather than using traditional grammatical categories, Systemic Functional Linguistics provides a set of functional terms to be applied to elements within a language. These terms are grouped into categories called metafunctions. The metafunctions of Systemic Functional Linguistics provide a much broader and comprehensive understanding of Biblical Hebrew than traditional grammatical categories. This study attempts to apply two of the metafunctions of Systemic Functional Linguistics to the text of Judges 3:12-30. The analysis utilizes the functional labels associated with the metafunctions and applies them to the clauses of the Biblical Hebrew text. The first metafunction, known as the Interpersonal Metafunction, seeks to understand clauses as they are used as a means of interaction. The primary goal of the Interpersonal Metafunction is to realize how the Subject and Predicate combine in order to convey meaning as a form of communication via the Finite. The second metafunction, the Ideational Metafunction, attempts to relate how language is used to describe reality. Participants in a clause are related to one of six Process: Material, Mental, Relational, Existential, Verbal, and Behavioral. The other elements in the clause are also analyzed and labeled depending on their function. The results of this study will show that Systemic Functional Linguistics is a viable option for linguistic analysis of Biblical Hebrew, using the text of Judges 3:12-30 as a case study for applying the functional labels and analyzing the clauses of Biblical Hebrew narrative. While the text encompasses only a small percentage of the Old Testament, the applications of this a study are not limited to Judges. The functional labels used in the analysis provide both exegetical and practical applications for use with other Biblical Hebrew texts.
