The purpose of this research was to provide an integrative model for methodologies commonly used in interpreting the Bible. Relevance Theory (RT), a pragmatic theory in the field of linguistics, describes in theoretical detail how the process of communication works. Each hermeneutical methodology gives insight into a different portion of the process of communication, and this project shows how they work together to contribute to a full literary interpretation of the biblical text. Chapter 1 examines foundational issues such as the divide between historical and literary criticisms at a theoretical level, debates in philosophical hermeneutics concerning meaning in texts, and the possibility of interdisciplinary work between the fields of pragmatics and hermeneutics. An in-depth explanation of RT in ch. 2 provides the foundation for a "`relevant' model of methodologies" and a "'relevant' interpretive model," subsequently applied to the text of Philemon in ch. 3. This project provides theoretical justification for employing multiple methodologies (even those with seemingly conflicting substructures) and guidance for their combination in the search for a coherent and complete meaning.
