Thesis (M.A.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2017.
Includes bibliographical references
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze and determine which primary source or sources were used by the scribe of Codex Bezae in the copying and transmitting of the explicit Old Testament quotations in the Greek text of Luke's Gospel. The research was limited to the nine explicit quotations in Luke initiated by the introductory formula, "It is written", with special attention given to the singular readings contained within these Old Testament quotations. The relevant first-hand sources analyzed included the Greek, Hebrew, and occasionally Latin Old Testament traditions, which were then compared against the text of Codex Bezae and other pertinent New Testament manuscripts. The physical characteristics of Codex Bezae (paleography, stichometry, codicology, etc.) were given special attention, resulting in a greater degree of certainty concerning the scribe's sources and tendencies. The data gleaned from the preceding methods and sources led to the conclusion that Codex Bezae's scribe relied primarily on a non-extant or indiscernible source for the Old Testament quotations in Luke, possibly evincing the scribe's memory or creative tendencies in copying. The goals of this research were to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of ancient Christian scribal transmission, to discover the tendencies of ancient scribes' interaction between their exemplars and copies, and to open further dialogue and investigations into the treatment of Old Testament texts in early Christianity.
