This thesis will argue that Matthew presents Jesus as the fulfillment of Ps 118. Jesus is (1) the direct fulfillment of the psalm's expectation for a son of David and (2) the typological fulfillment of the pattern of rejection and vindication as the new David. Psalm 118 commemorates the military victory of a Davidic king, likely David, while also encouraging the reader to hope for further manifestations of YHWH's [special characters omitted] by the agency of a future son of David. Additionally, the OT prophets employ the pattern of rejection followed by vindication in the life of David, as presented in this psalm, to create a typological expectation that the new David will also be first rejected and then vindicated. Matthew presents Jesus as the fulfillment of the son of David expectation created by this psalm (Matt 21:9), but he also presents Jesus as rejected in accordance with the typological expectation created by the Davidic pattern of the psalm (Matt 21:42). Finally, Matthew indicates that Jesus will be received at his future parousia in consummative fulfillment of the son of David expectation in Ps 118 (Matt 23:39). In this way, Matthew presents Jesus's coming, rejection, and expectation for future vindication to be according to the pattern of Ps 118.
