Jesus is first asked about his authority by the Jewish leaders at the beginning of Luke's temple scene (20:1-21:38), launching a series of seemingly disparate pericopes that culminate in the "eschatological discourse." Despite the significant scholarly attention devoted to the authority of Jesus, previous studies have operated without answering an essential question: how does Luke narrate authority? Luke does not explain authority in any kind of theoretical or philosophical way so that his audience can understand what he is communicating. He simply narrates it, and his hearers understand. Most scholars look at texts that use the word [Special characters omitted], incorporate presupposed definitions of authority, or adjectivalize it by concentrating on a particular aspect (e.g., political or religious). This study contends that how Luke narrates authority needs to be considered in order to properly understand Jesus's authority in the Third Gospel. Throughout the Gospel, Luke highlights Jesus's authority over the material world, supramundane beings, and humanity, but it is in the temple scene-a coherent unit threaded together by the authority discourse in each pericope-where his domain is understood to reach even to the reordering of the world at the last day. In contrast to the tyrannical-like activity of the Jewish leadership in the temple, Luke narrates Jesus as having a domain of authority that parallels what is ascribed to Yahweh alone and far beyond what is attributed to exemplary humans in the ancient world. This proclamation prepares the hearer for the reversal of authority in the rest of the passion narrative, in which Jesus submits to condemnation and crucifixion at the hands of human "authorities.".
