Dispensationalism has been criticized for what opponents see as a lack of clarity with respect to God's plan of salvation. While dispensationalists have affirmed that this plan has a common basis (Christ's death), a common requirement (faith), and a common object (God), they have not agreed on what continuity is found in the content of faith. The purpose of this dissertation is to show that Paul's use of the Abraham story in Romans 4:1-25 demonstrates that faith in the promised Seed, Messiah, is a sine qua non of God's plan of salvation. To accomplish this purpose, this study shows that Abraham's faith in Genesis was in God's promised Seed of blessing, Abraham's Heir. In Romans 4:1-25, Paul announces that the Heir whose identity was unknown in Abraham's day was revealed to be Jesus Christ. The change, then, between Abraham's faith and the faith of New Testament believers is found in what could be known of this Seed/Heir. This study has three parts. Part one provides a history of the interpretation of Romans 4:1-25 in the dispensational tradition. Through this history, it is shown that dispensationalists have been divided when it comes to the content of saving faith. There have been those who argue that little continuity is to be found in the content of faith and those who, from the beginning, have believed that Messiah is a continuous element of faith's content, past and present. The difference between these two factions hinges on what each believed was revealed in the Genesis account of Abraham's faith. Part two examines the faith of Abraham in Genesis 15:6 and demonstrates that Abraham's faith was in God's promise of an Heir through whom the nations of the earth would be blessed (12:3). This content formed part of Abraham's faith and led to his justification. Part three examines Paul's use of the Abraham story in Romans 4:1-25 and shows that Abraham's faith was in God's promise of an Heir. Although the identity of this Heir was unknown to Abraham, Paul revealed that this Heir was Jesus in whom New Testament believers place their faith.
