In Mark 7:25-30, 9:14-29, and 10:46-52, there is a pattern of appeal and answer that appears to recall OT lament forms. The use of lament forms in the NT has been anticipated by some OT and NT scholars alike, and the goal of this thesis is to test whether these prayers may be examples of NT lament. To do so, I will survey the work already done in OT lament and study how NT lament might build on that foundation of lament as a faithful response. Next, I will look at Mark 7:24-30, 9:14-29, and 10:46-52 to discern if they manifest both the structure and function expected of a prose lament prayer. Finally, I will consider the implications of a lament reading of these pleas and how that corresponds with current scholarship on these passages. The formal and functional congruence of these passages with OT lament forms suggests that they can be read as examples of NT prose lament prayers; such a reading undergirds main themes and contributes to a richer reading of the text.
