This dissertation investigates the Hebrew Bible's presentation of door imagery in light of its ancient Near Eastern textual environment. It demonstrates that silhouetting the Bible's presentation of door imagery against the presentation of door imagery in ancient Near Eastern texts yields a range of fresh insights into the significance of doors in the biblical world and the functions of door imagery within the biblical text. Chapter 1 observes that several Hebrew narratives call attention to door-leaves for reasons that are unclear. It then introduces the linguistic and cultural gap that may exist between a biblical author's target audience and the modern audience regarding the significance of imagery. It argues that the Hebrew Bible is a product of an ancient Near Eastern literary/cultural milieu; thus, it is reasonable to investigate the Hebrew Bible's presentation of door imagery in light of door imagery in ancient Near Eastern texts. Part I (chapters 2 through 6) surveys the presentation of the door in a wide variety of ancient Near Eastern texts. Each chapter treats door imagery under one of five rubrics and compiles a taxonomy of the uses and possible effects of door imagery within its various contexts. The taxonomies create a means of better acquainting the modern reader with the significance of door imagery in the texts of the biblical world. Chapter 7 compares and contrasts biblical and ancient Near Eastern presentations of door imagery. It notes many points of contact between the Bible's presentation of doors and the presentation of doors in the texts of the biblical world. The chapter also notes presentations of door imagery unique to the Bible. The points of contact between the Bible's presentation of door imagery and presentation of door imagery in ancient Near Eastern texts provide further warrant for evaluating the presentation of door imagery in selected Hebrew narratives. Chapter 8 investigates the door imagery of selected Hebrew narratives in light of the taxonomies compiled in Part I. The taxonomies provide explanatory power in four narrative episodes. Chapter 9 consists of a summary for the study and suggests prospects for future research.
