The Bible's clear, consistent testimony in both the Old and New Testaments is that the present universe is not the same universe in which God and His people will dwell forever. The question then arises, "How will God transition from the present universe to the eternal one?" To answer that question, two main arguments have come to the fore. First, there are those who argue that the Bible teaches that the present created order will be annihilated-that it will be so thoroughly destroyed in the fiery judgment described in places like 2 Peter 3:10-13 that there will be literally no part of it remaining after God's judgment is complete. On the other hand, some contend that the universe will undergo indescribably terrible retribution, perhaps to the extent that its most basic building blocks-at even the elemental or atomic level-are dissolved and burned and separated from each other. Yet, that destruction, as profound as it will be, will not annihilate the universe. As proponents of this position assert, the "new heaven and new earth" about which Isaiah, Peter, and John write will indeed be new, but they will nevertheless be the product of restoration, rather than annihilation of the former kosmos and recreation ex nihilo a la creation account in Genesis 1. The primary goal of this paper is to advance the latter of these two views that the universe will be restored, reshaped, or renewed at the Day of the Lord, but not annihilated and recreated ex nihilo. To make its case, the paper first surveys views from the late Second Temple period to the present day. In so doing, the evidence reveals that some of the most highly regarded thinkers and writers in Christian history (and before) eschewed the notion of creation's eschatological annihilation. Thus, to hold that position is to affirm a long-held interpretation of the relevant Scripture passages. Next, the dissertation considers the most relevant texts from the Old and New Testaments to seek to determine whether the Bible writers have spoken clearly enough on the topic to allow the interpreter to come to a reasonably solid conclusion. This researcher means to convince the reader that those Bible writers have indeed done that, and that the preponderance of evidence they provide is on the side of those who would reject the belief in the universe's annihilation at the Day of the Lord. In so doing, the paper makes forays into lexical and contextual considerations, all the while demonstrating that no verse or passage used by some to assert a cosmic annihilation passage actually requires the Bible reader to adopt that position. Finally, the paper concludes with a short consideration of the logical reasons why the annihilation of the universe is not the best way to interpret the texts with which the dissertation deals. Chief among these is the logical conclusion of the annihilation position: If the cosmic annihilation view is correct, Satan is able to damage irreparably the creation God called "very good" in Genesis 1. The researcher's case reveals that to hold to the restoration, not annihilation, of heaven and earth at the end of the age enjoys manifold historical support from careful, time-tested theologians; benefits from the data from in-depth lexical and contextual analysis of the germane Old and New Testament verses and passages; and "makes sense" in light of the way the Bible uniformly depicts both God and Satan and the power of each relative to the other. In an appendix, since at least two of the texts with which the paper deals link the telos of creation with that of mankind, the researcher interacts briefly with the question of the annihilation of the impenitent. succinctly affirming the historical Christian position that the damned will suffer conscious torment eternally.
