Previous studies of Genesis 37-50 have neglected the narrator's use of cultural identity as an aspect of characterization. Most notably, they have not sufficiently considered the role Jacob's characterization plays in identity formation within the story. This study argues that the narrator of Genesis 37-50 uses Judah's Canaanization and Joseph's Egyptianization to create a crisis of cultural identity that he resolves via Jacob's characterization as the patriarchal head of the Israelite family.
