The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate Paul's utilization of Abraham in Rom 1-4. Though rhetorical and literary approaches to NT interpretation have generated reflection on Paul's explicit appeal to the patriarch in Rom 4:1-25, scholarship largely has overlooked Abraham's implicit role in the preceding chapters. Intratextual connections suggest a more substantial role for the patriarch within the apostle's logical flow. The specific research question presented here is, What is the significance of Abraham for Paul's argument in Rom 1-4? This overarching inquiry yields further conceptual and methodological questions. Paul does not operate in a cultural vacuum, necessitating consideration of how Paul's Jewish predecessors and contemporaries understood Abraham. Furthermore, a critical relationship between Paul's Abraham and that of his contemporaries must be established in order to appreciate the utilization of the patriarch within Romans. Given that Paul does not mention the patriarch until Rom 4:1, how is Abraham's significance demonstrable in preceding chapters in which Paul does not appeal to him explicitly? To address these problems, this research combines Richard Hays's approach to intertextual "echoes" with collective memory theory. Memory theory provides a means for investigating cultural frameworks at the literary level, even when these frameworks are engaged only implicitly. The resultant thesis is that Paul understands Abraham as a locus for the various components of Israelite identity. The first chapter surveyed developments in biblical intertextuality in the twentieth century, supplementing Hays's approach with considerations from memory theory. The resulting method was pursued in subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 presented the narrative logic of Paul's remembrance of Abraham by working through the text of Rom 3:27-4:25. Chapter 3 entailed a thematic survey of appeals to Abraham in early Jewish literature to establish a comparative base for Paul's remembrance of the patriarch. The final chapter explored Rom 1-3 in light of early Jewish remembrances of Abraham. The hypothesis is that Abraham serves as a unifying rhetorical warrant for Paul's argument in Rom 1-3 in anticipation of the explicit appeal to the patriarch in Rom 4, establishing continuity between Israel's patriarch and Paul's gospel.
