Thesis (M.A.)--Trinity International University, 2016.

This thesis explores the current debate over basic word order in Biblical Hebrew (VSO vs SVO). The goal is to provide a taxonomy of discourse situations and clause types wherein the different views of basic word order will produce different interpretations. Chapter 1 introduces the typological study of word order, my research question, and my methodological approach. Chapter 2 surveys the history of word order research in BH studies and English BH grammars in order to lay the groundwork for understanding the present debate. Chapter 3 introduces the linguistic discipline of discourse analysis; the concepts of pragmatics, information structure, topic, comment, and focus; and defines basic word order. Chapter 4 introduces the major voices in the word order debate. The main works treated are from Robert Holmstedt, Adina Moshavi, and Aaron Hornkohl. Chapter 5 is a syntactically outlined commentary on the Sodom Episode (Gen 18-19) with word order labels and commentary on marked clauses using an VSO information structure. Chapter 6 is a commentary in the same vein as Chapter 5, but using Holmstedt's SVO information structure. Chapter 7 presents a summarizing discussion of markedness in each commentary. The thesis finds that the readings produced by the two views largely overlap, with little exegetical consequence. The clauses that provide the most opportunity for significant difference of interpretation are simple qatal and yiqtol (VS or SV) clauses without any other fronted constituents (with VS clauses being more likely for differences) and clauses where the verb can be understood modally, but has no explicit indicators of modality apart from word order.
