This dissertation explores biblical spirituality through an examination of transformative readings of two biblical narratives using the methodologies (Girardian theory, modern hermeneutics and modern literary theory) and invites the reader to engage with the narratives without any bloodshed in the specific context in front of the reader. Both 2 Samuel 12 and Luke 24 are narratives, and each has a smaller unit within it that is composed of either a parable or a reinterpretation of an event. The smaller piece in 2 Samuel is a parable, and in Luke it is an implied revisiting of certain passages from the prophets. The dissertation compares, specifically, how the parable functions for the characters and for the reader in 2 Samuel 12 and how the reinterpretation of Jesus' crucifixion functions for the characters and the reader in Luke 24. This dissertation focuses on understanding the two "inset pieces." The inset piece is in each case a little thing, in that someone tells a parable or offers a reinterpretation. Even though the genres of the two narratives are slightly different, the use of narrative in the inset narrative in each case is similar. Even though we do not know exactly what David said or what the disciples heard, we know that when David heard Nathan's parable and when the disciples heard Jesus' reinterpretation, they all realized something they had never thought or recognized previously. How the narrative (story) told by one character i to other characters changes their hearts! The point of the comparison is that the inserted story is enough to effect changes in both passages. According to Girard, a story can move us not only to do violence but also not to do so. The story within the story exposes the mechanism of scapegoating as unnecessary. The characters see it, but it is not really about that-it is about us. We may see it briefly, too, but this may not be enough to keep us from continuing to create scapegoats and to retaliate.
