The story of "Jesus and the Canaanite Woman" in Matthew 15:21-28 stands out as an exemplar of the Gospel's invitation to universalism. However, this thematic lens continues to encourage reading past both the Canaanite woman and her daughter in the story as worthy and valuable characters in and of themselves. The appropriation of the theoretical principles of Alex Woloch, David Galef, Thomas Docherty, and Adele Reinhartz provide the framework to revisit these two characters. An analysis of the Canaanite woman and her daughter in conjunction with the literary framework of these scholars demonstrates these characters' importance beyond the representational and symbolic significance traditionally associated with them in the history of interpretation. In the Canaanite woman, we discover a caring mother, desperate and motivated to find healing. She is aggressive, direct in her search, persistent, and will not accept `no' for an answer. The obstacles to healing do not change her convictions but encourage her even more. Though the daughter does not speak, all the movements and interactions within the story are guided by her silent and invisible presence. She is the reason for the encounter between her mother and Jesus. This character study provides a sound framework to demonstrate how these minor and anonymous characters can be read and elaborated. Above all, it expands interpretation beyond the limitations of typical categorical designations and traditional understandings that have confined these two characters in the past.
