Studies on the use of Scripture in the Fourth Gospel (FG) are often methodologically limited by two key weaknesses. First, the purview of Scripture's function is generally restricted to direct quotations, precluding a comprehensive assessment of the Gospel's use of Scripture in allusion and symbolism. Second, the relationship between the FG's use of Scripture as authoritative text and its own self-presentation as an authoritative text goes relatively unnoticed. My research on the function of Scripture in the FG therefore aims to fill this gap and to demonstrate that the FG author's interpretation and appropriation of Scripture in composition of the Gospel reveals a fundamental correlation between his use of Scripture and the legitimization of his own text. I approach this relationship by focusing on the FG author's use of the textual medium, which includes both scriptural allusion and citation as distinct yet complimentary methods of utilizing scriptural text. I have chosen for analysis the pericopae of John 9 and 12:37-41, as they incorporate the same Isaianic text (Isa 6:10) by different methods for a common purpose: highlighting and legitimizing the authority of the FG author's interpretation and appropriation of Scripture in Gospel composition. In support of this proposal, I will examine the function of Scripture in both passages and in each develop a descriptive model that identifies how Scripture is used, whether by allusion or citation, for the common purpose of correlating textual appropriation of Scripture with the FG author's composition of authoritative text. My treatment of scriptural allusion in John 9 will generate a paradigm of two "levels" for Scripture's function, emplotted within the developing narrative and incorporated allusively into Gospel composition. My analysis of scriptural citation in 12:37-41 will identify a paradigm of "prophetic voice," a prophetic legitimization for scriptural testimony applied to Isaiah and appropriated by the FG author for his own testimony. Ultimately, what the two-level function of Scripture accomplishes by allusion, the appropriation of prophetic voice accomplishes by citation: both paradigms directly correlate scriptural text with Gospel text and confirm that there is an essential relationship between them.
