This dissertation asserts that charismatic interpreters of Scripture have limited their interactions with the New Testament (let alone other texts from the Second Temple Period) in their assessments of how the Spirit interacts with the interpreter in the process of interpreting Scripture. Therefore, an assessment of representative texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament is presented in order to understand how the work of the Spirit is portrayed in those writings. This foundation serves as a premise for arguing that, although some authors of the DSS and NT use similar ancient Jewish hermeneutical methods to interpret the same passage(s) from the Jewish Scriptures for their specific communities, their resulting interpretations differ. History, culture, and worldview play a significant role in the process of interpretation as the authors of some DSS texts look forward to the time when the Messiah(s) will come and focus on how to live in preparation for the end of this Present Age. On the other hand, some authors of the NT focus on understanding the mystery of Jesus and on how to live within their specific historical cultural context in preparation for his return. Within the matrix of ancient Jewish midrash, the methods of pesher, haggadah, halakhah, and rewritten Bible are introduced. An example of each method and the results of the usage of the method by the respective DSS or NT authors are provided. This dissertation concludes with the argument that the Spirit may indeed prompt a variety of interpretations of the same passages from Scripture, regardless of whether or not the interpreter gives direct attribution to the Spirit for his or her interpretation.
