This study exposes the persistent application of double standards by literary critics in judging the merits of the four protagonists in Madame Bovary (1857), Anna Karenina (1877), The Awakening (1899) and The House of Mirth (1905). I propose the source of discrimination against Emma Bovary, Anna Karenina, Edna Pontellier and Lily has a dual origin: the gender of the protagonists and their suicides. In arguing the existence of gender bias in the criticism, the study takes a feminist stand and joins other revisionist enterprises that show the prevalent devaluation of female agency in Western culture. The study establishes new ground in that it considers the suicide of the protagonists crucial in their devaluation. Cultural aversion to suicide and belief in its irrational nature combine in the criticism to encourage the perception of Emma, Anna, Edna and Lily as weak and psychologically impaired. A rereading of the texts accompanies an examination of critical literature written since publication of the novels. Literary and historical scholarship on women and psychological works that posits the intentional and rational nature of some suicides undergirds this project. The study offers an alternative view of the protagonists and their self-destructions. In this interpretation Emma, Anna, Edna and Lily act courageously in protecting fundamental interests that define their identities.
