The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between individuals' memories of the type of parenting they received as a child and their (a) attachment style as an adult and (b) early maladaptive schemas (EMS), as well as the associations between attachment style and EMS. Additionally, the question of whether people with different attachment styles, EMS, and memories of parents' caregiving styles experience their relationships differently was explored. A hypothesized model of these relations was proposed and tested through path analysis, using self-report survey data collected from 218 undergraduate psychology students. Parenting style did not emerge as a significant predictor of attachment style, but all the parenting styles were related in theoretically meaningful ways to the EMS, with the greatest number of effects coming from an inconsistent fathering style. There were no significant direct effects of parenting style on adult romantic relationships. However, two parenting styles did significantly affect romantic relationships through their effect on particular schemas. The only attachment style that significantly affected romantic relationships was the fearful style. Though there were many effects for schemas on romantic relationships, the two most powerful schemas seemed to be Social Isolation and Shame. These results indicate that parenting style does appear to affect the development of early maladaptive schemas, and that there is more to fathers' role than is popularly believed. It may also be possible to conclude that it is far worse for one's relationships, and probably for one's happiness in general, if EMS are an indicator, to have a negative view of the self than it is to have a low opinion of others. Since a great number of associations were found between attachment styles and schemas, it may be that the mediating variables between attachment style and parenting style are the EMS. Based on these findings, a new model of possible relations among these variables is proposed.
