The dissertation aims to revise traditional accounts of eighteenth-century England's "cult of sensibility." These accounts focus on the "Man of Feeling" and generally posit a rise of sensibility through the works of Richardson, Sterne, and Mackenzie and a subsequent decline into the gothic and sentimental novels usually written by women. This thesis, however, takes the "Woman of Feeling" as the figure central to eighteenth-century England's always ambivalent sense of sensibility, linking the rise of sensibility to the emergence of the new domestic woman whose role was to provide for her family emotionally and morally, if not financially. Through close readings of conduct literature and novels by Richardson, Radcliffe, Wollstonecraft, and Austen, the dissertation investigates points of co-operation and competition between two genres largely written for a female audience, tracing the struggle to determine what kinds of responsiveness female sensibility was supposed to constitute and did in fact constitute. Chapter One explores eighteenth-century conduct literature's contradictory descriptions of female sensibility, arguing that these conflicting signals served to produce women whose emotional energies were constantly directed to others' needs. Chapter Two examines Pamela, Parts 1 and 2, as the paradigmatic novel of sensibility: Richardson sets out to embody conduct-book descriptions of sensibility in the virtuous heroine who reforms her rake, but Pamela's difficulties as a wife illustrate narrative's tendency to make explicit contradictions already implicit in conduct-book constructions of sensibility. The second half of the dissertation considers women novelists writing in the 1790s, who attempt in various ways to rewrite the conduct books' construction of sensibility. Chapter Three argues that Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho deconstructs the negative stereotypes of sensibility that it ostensibly endorses. Chapter Four investigates Wollstonecraft's problematic attempt in The Wrongs of Woman to reclaim desire as a legitimate aspect of female sensibility and to forge a new plot for the woman of feeling. The dissertation closes with Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility, exploring Austen's resistance to conduct literature's construction of sensibility through her novels' insistence that all representations of sensibility--their own included--are fictions to be read critically.
