This dissertation examines cinema exhibition and city film in Wilhelmine and Weimar Berlin. Drawing on archival materials and close readings of both familiar and lesser known films which appropriate outdoor footage from Berlin, the dissertation argues that cinema became an emblematic cultural practice and shaped Berlin's path as a modern European capital and a center of a rich cinematic culture. The project focuses on two discrete periods in German cinema. The first is determined by the emergence of the first Wilhelmine movie palaces, long-feature films in the 1910s, and extensive debates about the social and artistic purpose of cinema. The second spans the peak of elaborate Weimar exhibition practices, the wide application of sound technology, and the increasing politicization of artistic practice and multi-medial experimentation at the end of the 1920s and beginning of the 1930s. The dissertation exploits the scholarly split between Wilhelmine and Weimar cinema, but goes against the interpretation of Wilhelmine cinema as a preparatory phase for the German "Golden Twenties," just as it also avoids defining Weimar cinema through canonical Expressionist films. While it highlights the ruptures between periods, the project also underscores continuities and re-formulations of cinema exhibition and film practice. Thus, it elaborates on the Wilhelmine palaces as a representative model for the Weimar "palaces of distraction," although the latter exemplified a more consistent integration of modern architectural vocabulary and entertainment goals. The dissertation also argues that Wilhelmine films similarly attempted to incorporate city experience into the cinematic medium-a commitment which Weimar city films accomplished through a more rigorous experimentation with image and sound.
