This critical review of the literature examined themes related to behavioral addictions, social media technology, and temptation. The study included 49 peer-reviewed articles published in the last 10 years and used a six-step thematic analysis methodology. The outcomes highlighted the intricacy of addictions to social media technology, including biopsychological-spiritual factors and the lack of unified definitions and diagnostic criteria to the concept. This study underscored unease for the younger generation today and increasing exposure to an overload of social media technology influences and isolation. Professionals struggle to find definitive measurements and treatments with the lack of standard tools to assess behavioral addictions. The current analysis revealed themes including the complexity of behavioral addictions, temptation, concerns for younger generations, and professional recommendations. Results bestowed apprehension for emotional well-being and the ability to physically rest and self-regulate after using social media technology. As a construct, temptation provides a means to theorize many factors that drive addictions. Thus, addictive behaviors viewed through lenses of temptation may be helpful in conceptualizing driving forces, perception, and fueling desires behind the behavior. The researcher provided suggestions to inform clinical practices and interventions, highlighting the importance of additional studies.
