The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between art and emotion. Ultimately, I will create art influenced by emotions. In my research I explored four artists including Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch, Kathe Kollwitz, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner with the intention of examining how they expressed emotions through their art. I researched multiple paintings by these artists as well as their background information such as upbringings and personal struggles which emotionally aided in the creation of these paintings. To create artwork based on emotion for the benefits of exploring the relationship between art and emotion, I interviewed a group of individuals ranging from ages 28 to 33. The interview questions are as follows: What makes you happy? What makes you sad? What makes you afraid? What do you struggle with? What have you lost? What would you change? The questions used in the interviews are purposely vague to allow the individuals to think without restrictions. The emotional responses to those questions were then used to create a portrait of that individual, ultimately inspiring a work of art. The method used to conduct interviews were inspired by American artist Alice Neel and German artist Kathe Kollwitz. Certain aspects of the painting component were inspired by contemporary artists such as Jean Michele Basquiat and Harmonia Rosales, along with modern artist Pablo Picasso. These artists inspired the emotional context I needed to complete the work. Ultimately, I went on a journey of discovering and creating emotion in art.
